CENTENNIAL OF HOLY TRINITY CATHEDRAL'S CONSECRATION CELEBRATED
CHICAGO, IL - A year of celebration that included the proclamation of the centennial year by His Grace, Bishop Job, a concert, a picnic, an alumni homecoming, a symposium on Orthodox culture, and the celebration of the patronal feasts of Saints Tikhon of Moscow and John Kochurov culminated in a glorious weekend marking the 100th anniversary of the consecration of Holy Trinity Cathedral here October 30-November 2, 2003.
The celebration opened with the Vigil and Divine Liturgy marking the feast of Saint John, who served as the cathedral's pastor at the time of its design by noted architect Louis Sullivan and construction. Joining faithful from throughout the Chicago area were Saint John's great granddaughter Tatiana Kochurova and his great-great grandson, Igor, both from St. Petersburg, Russia, where the latter is studying for the priesthood. Arrangements for their visit were made by cathedral parishioner Tatiana Peters.
On Saturday and Sunday, November 1-2, the Vigil and Divine Liturgy were concelebrated by His Beatitude, Metropolitan Herman; His Beatitude, Metropolitan Theodosius; Bishop Job; the Very Rev. John Adamcio, cathedral dean; and numerous Chicago Deanery clergy. Other hierarchs participating in various services during the four-day celebration included His Eminence, Metropolitan Christopher, Serbian Orthodox Metropolitanate; His Eminence, Archbishop Vsevolod, Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA; and His Eminence, Archbishop Nicolae, Romanian Orthodox Patriarchate. The cathedral choir, under the direction of Dr. Peter Jermihov, faithfully sang responses at the liturgical services, experiencing a new height and depth in its liturgical ministry.
In addition to the services, a Saturday symposium, "Mortar and Martyrdom" traced the development of ecclesiastical architecture from the Jerusalem temple through Byzantium and Russia In his symposium presentation, Architect George Mangan highlighted the cathedral's unique architecture, noting that while Louis Sullivan left his signature imprint on the building, he had humbly submitted to traditional Orthodox forms in developing his final design. Dr. Lisa Gassin delivered a presentation on the life of Saint John Kochurov, while Tatiana Kochurova offered family reminiscences and eye-witness accounts of the life and martyrdom of her great grandfather. The Very Rev. Alexander Garklavs, rector of Holy Trinity Church, East Meadow, NY spoke on the life of Saint Tikhon, who consecrated the cathedral in 1903, while Bishop Job reflected on how the blood of the martyrs remains the very mortar which upholds and strengthens the Body of Christ, the Church.
